HYBRID 2020 –‘migration’ Exhibition - October 2020 at centrespace gallery Bristol
Our most recent exhibition was on the theme of Migration and included work in paint, print, pen and ink, mixed media and ceramics. We chose this theme at the end of 2019 and then as usual, we prepared for the exhibition over a one year period through a group process of art-making, research and discussion. However, like everyone our lives and plans for 2020 were significantly disrupted by the COVID 19 pandemic. For example, we often had to meet using Zoom, there was no exhibition preview and we adapted the way the exhibition was viewed by visitors to the gallery in line with government advice on social distancing.
Similarly, our focus at times broadened to include and make links between unfolding events and a changing social and political context which was reflected in the work we exhibited.
Our starting point was to explore the theme sensitively- mindful of the fact that the word migration means more than simply ‘the movement of people or animals and birds from one place to another’ , but is also unavoidably linked with the distressing and challenging political context for many migrant workers, immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
This multi-dimensional view of migration was reflected both explicitly and implicitly in the range of work exhibited which included work on, borders, home and personal family history as well as the migratory journeys of people, animals and birds.
We also donated 10% of sales to Art Refuge - a local charity who support displaced people through art making and art therapy.
Visitors comments about the show were without exception positive . Many people seemed inspired and also grateful to be at a real live cultural event after such a difficult year for the Arts .
"So lovely to come and see such a vibrant and thought provoking exhibition. many thanks!"
"A very interesting exhibition. Well done all for getting it together in these difficult times."
"Thoughtful...and right for the times" "...pertinent and moving..." "
" ...a powerful and thought provoking collection...thank you"
